Changing the narrative about refugees

This June, as part of STIRE (Supporting the Integration of the Resettled) and Saolta, Development Perspectives is delighted to invite those working in Adult & Community Education - particularly those working in/interested in the area of refugee integration to attend this 120-minute workshop.

The overall session will be framed around Sustainable Development Goal 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, while supported by Development Education principles regarding the need to critically examine current narratives around the variables which intersect migration and integration. 

Background and information of workshop

The overall session will be framed around Sustainable Development Goal 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, while supported by Development Education principles regarding the need to critically examine current narratives around the variables which intersect migration and integration.

Bringing both a local and global perspective, our guest speakers will focus on meaningful and sustainable engagement of refugees. During this workshop, experiences and knowledge from research conducted within STIRE will be shared.

Guest speakers

Razan Ibraheem

Razan Ibraheem is an Irish-Syrian journalist and activist. She came to Ireland to do her MA (ELT) at the University of Limerick. Her deep sorrow for the tragic situation and the mass displacement in her homeland has led her to volunteer in Greece to help refugees. She gave a speech with the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, in Ireland. In 2015, she was invited by the UN to a high-level meeting on global responsibility sharing for pathways for admission of Syrian refugees. Razan is a regular contributor to various newspaper articles and current events programmes on Irish radio and TV. Razan was awarded the International Woman of the Year by Irish Tatler in 2016.

Dr Julie Norman

Dr. Julie Norman is a Teaching Fellow in Politics and International Relations at University College London (UCL), and an independent consultant/researcher on conflict and development with the UN, British Council, Christian Aid, and other organisations. She has worked closely with refugees and IDPs in Canada, the US, the UK, the Middle East, central Africa, and Myanmar, and she has published numerous articles and op-eds on forced migration. She is a frequent contributor to the BBC, Al Jazeera, and other news outlets, and she is the host of the Julie Norman Show, a podcast on ethics and current affairs.

Logistics

Platform: This workshop will be hosted via Zoom. Links will be sent in advance to all participants.

Participants: Places are limited. Preference will be given to those working in the Adult & Community sector, ideally those working within the subject space.
