Development Perspectives releases short documentary capturing stories of the lives and work of the Sisters of The Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM) over generations.

We are delighted to announce the release of our latest documentary ‘Spirit’. which is now available to view online at www.developmentperspectives.ie/dptv The short documentary captures stories of the lives and work of the Sisters of The Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM) over generations.

Interviews with the Sisters offer an insight into their experiences of working with victims of Cholera, Ebola outbreaks, HIV/AIDS crises and amputations. The viewer gets a sense of the strength and resilience of these highly educated women.

Inputs about the legacy of the Medical Missionaries of Mary’s overseas work and current perspectives on the Church are contributed by Dr. Conor Mulvagh, UCD, former Trócaire CEO, Justin Kilcullen and LMFM presenter Gerry Kelly.

An explainer piece is provided which outlines the intentions behind the making of the documentary, acknowledging the complex perception of the Church today. An Educational resource is also available to help teachers and lecturers address some of the difficult arguments and questions that may arise from the documentary.

The Medical Missionaries of Mary established Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, in 1957, as the International Missionary Training Hospital. The MMM’s order has provided health care to vulnerable regions all over the world since it was founded by Mother Mary Martin (1892 - 1975) who is buried in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Drogheda, close to her convent in Beechgrove.

The documentary was produced by Bobby McCormack, director of Development Perspectives and directed by Alan Markey, with Blaine Rennicks as Director of Photography.
